In early 2005 we began selecting materials for digitization based on a prioritized list. This list was created by doing a citation analysis on Tropicos, our botanical database, which contains citations for over 900,000 plant names and other bibliographic references. We programmatically counted the number of plant names described within each title to give an indication of its "taxonomic density." The results were then grouped by title and ordered by taxonomic density, giving us a list of the most important titles to be digitized, according to data within Tropicos.
