Alexander von Humboldt was one of the major figures in scientific exploration
and discovery of the nineteenth century, and his expedition, with Aimé
Bonpland, to South America, Cuba, and Mexico from 1799 to 1804, has been called
the scientific discovery of America. The two volume work, Plantes équinoxiales
(1808-1809), is one of six sections on botany in Voyage de Humboldt et Bonpland
volumes (1805-34). The text is by Humboldt and Bonpland and the plates are engravings
from drawings by Antoine Poiteau (1766-1854) and P.J.F.Turpin (1775-1840).
